He Died Like a Dog

Speaking in the Diplomatic Room entails a need for the language of diplomacy: compromise, understatement, modesty. Not from this president's English: Mutilated, thug, eliminated. It's the language of maximal affect.

Donald Trump answered the question, when is a human like a dog? When he dies.

A 'thug' terrorist was 'mutilated' then 'eliminated.'

It was "a great night for the United States and the world."

But the president doesn't just throw around labels. He tells the story of what happened in the terrorist compound.

He describes it like a man telling a story at the bar. He tells it like a Hollywood movie told in potted summary.

The terrorist "died after running into a dead-end tunnel, whimpering and crying and screaming."

The description is graphic. The president's English uses a large number of adverbs and adjectives. He adds color to his picture of the terrorist hunt, "as our dogs chased."

The president does not care about the language of diplomacy. The language of diplomacy would never work in the business world.

But does it work in global politics?
