Really?

So I clicked on an interview with a historian, archaeologist, and anthropologist who said the aliens probably teleported them to the west bank of the Nile river?

Really?

The next video explained how these ancient Egyptian mausoleums might one day power human space travel. Really?

Et cetera and so on and so on…

…and?

And now it was time for bed.

Where had the time gone?

I had gone down a "rabbit hole"

Rabbits live in warrens. A kind of maze of underground tunnels with holes cut into the earth above to grant quick entrance and escape from predators. Down the hole they can rest and check their phones. That is where most humans disappear down rabbit holes: on their phones.

Easy to remember but disappointingly non-metaphorical.

I had gone down a pyramids rabbit hole. Apart from eating precious time out of my short life, it was pleasant enough. One time I went down a 김기덕 rabbit hole. That wasn't so pleasant…

Other common subjects for rabbit holes are UFOs, 9-11 conspiracy theories, all conspiracy theories, the Beatles, cats, dogs, life advice, dash cam footage, and the Choi tae-won divorce case. Basically anything.

Too many, too much. The problem of excess choice that we face every day.

So why do we go down rabbit holes? The same reason as the rabbits.

To escape what's above, the predators of our everyday life.

Some words in Korea seem to act like magic. They convey on the subject an elite wise glow.

The most magical of all these magical words is, apparently, 'Nobel.'

Korea has long coveted and envied the number of Nobel prizes awarded to certain neighboring nations.

But there isn't necessarily a connection between Nobel prizes and social development, wealth, and happiness—and certainly not crime.

Singapore, for example, has zero Nobel prize winners.

So what?

Israel and America, on the other hand, have many. Those countries can not claim to be oceans of calm.

This Israeli-American economist recently accused South Korea of committing demographic suicide.

It was a form of race shaming, carried obliviously by a major national newspaper.

So what is this Israeli-American's solution to the problem?

Is it the sophisticated deployment of robot technologies to areas of the labor market suffering worker shortages?

Is it a targeted policy of short-term immigration from neighboring countries with similar cultures?

Or is it some imaginative future scenario envisaging a united peninsula?

No.

He thinks Korea should immigrate millions of men from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia—and they will be men—plus their dependents.

A man recognized by the Stockholm jury for his achievement in 'the dismal science' wants to fundamentally change Korea forever.

So beware of conflating wise, trustworthy, or good with nobel.

And beware the mainstream theorist, especially a globalist who doesn't care about the future welfare of your country.

한국에서 어떤 단어들은 마치 마법처럼 작동한다. 그 단어가 붙는 순간, 대상은 지혜롭고 권위 있는 존재처럼 보이는 후광을 얻게 된다.

이 마법 같은 단어들 가운데 가장 강력한 것은 아마도 '노벨'일 것이다.

한국은 이웃 나라들이 받은 노벨상 개수를 오랫동안 부러워하고 의식해 왔다.

하지만 노벨상과 사회 발전, 부, 행복 사이에는 반드시 어떤 관계가 있는 것이 아니다. 범죄와의 관계는 더더욱 아니다.

예를 들어 싱가포르는 노벨상 수상자가 단 한 명도 없다. 그래서 어쨌다는 것일까?

반면 이스라엘과 미국은 노벨상 수상자가 많다. 그렇다고 해서 그 나라들이 평온함으로 가득 찬 사회인 것은 아니다.

최근 한 이스라엘계 미국인 경제학자가 한국이 '인구학적 자살'을 하고 있다고 비판했다.

그것은 일종의 민족적 죄책감을 유도하는 주장이었다. 그리고 그 주장은 국내 주요 언론에 의해 별다른 문제의식 없이 전달되었다.

그렇다면 이 경제학자가 제시하는 해결책은 무엇일까?

노동력 부족을 겪는 분야에 발전된 로봇 기술을 정교하게 배치하는 것일까?

아니면 문화적으로 유사한 주변 국가들로부터 단기 이민자를 선별적으로 받아들이는 정책일까?

그것도 아니라면, 통일된 한반도를 상상하는 창의적인 미래 구상일까?

아니다.

그의 생각은 이렇다. 한국이 파키스탄, 방글라데시, 인도네시아에서 수백만 명의 이민자를 받아들여야 한다는 것이다. 그리고 그들은 대부분 남성일 것이다. 여기에 그들의 가족과 부양가족까지 함께 따라오게 될 것이다.

경제학이라는 학문 분야에서 스톡홀름 심사위원단의 인정을 받은 한 인물이 한국의 모습을 근본적으로, 그리고 영구적으로 바꾸는 정책을 권고하고 있는 것이다.

그러므로 노벨상 수상자라는 사실을 곧바로 지혜, 신뢰성, 혹은 선함과 동일시해서는 안 된다.

그리고 주류 이론가들을 경계해야 한다.

특히 여러분 나라의 미래와 복지보다 자신의 세계관을 더 중요하게 생각하는 초국가주의 성향의 이론가라면 더욱 그렇다.

As an outsider with an interest in the Korean language one thing I do enjoy is the linguistic content of the candidate party's visual pollution.

In the UK, certain political party campaign posters have achieved iconic status.

Labour isn't working played on the ruling party's name to stress the paradox of their failed labour policies and increasing unemployment.

As the cold war continued, the ruling conservative party then took aim at the opposition's weak stance on defence and the nuclear deterrent. Again, a pun playing on the various meaning of the word, 'arms'.

The labour party shot back in 2001, insinuating that the leader of the conservative opposition was a mere thatcherite throwback. The poster used a famous line from a horror movie.

A few years later, Labour attacked conservative promises on spending. In English, when you don't expect something to happen, you say it will happen the day that pigs fly.

But all these posters are taken from national elections. Local elections offer very little pungent satirical attack.

Korean local elections are different. There are almost no visuals apart from exclamation marks.

But the accusations and assertions are eyecatching if not borderline defamatory.

There are accusations about manipulation of public opinion and the destruction of democracy.

But mainly, the candidates question each other's morality.

there are accusations of assault, corruption,verbal abuse, and prior convictions.

it's all very personal. there is little discussion of policy. it is a kind of visual pollution.

George Orwell said political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable.

The murder weapon in Korean politics is the exclamation mark.

한국어에 관심 있는 외국인으로서, 내가 특히 재미있게 보는 것은 선거철 정당 현수막들의 언어적 시각공해다.

영국에서는 몇몇 정당의 선거 포스터가 거의 전설적인 상징성을 갖게 되었다.

"Labour Isn't Working"이라는 구호는 당시 집권당인 노동당(Labour)의 이름을 이용한 말장난이었다. 실패한 노동 정책과 증가하는 실업률이라는 역설을 강조한 것이다.

냉전이 계속되던 시기, 집권 보수당은 야당의 국방 및 핵 억지력에 대한 미온적인 태도를 공격했다. 여기서도 "arms"라는 단어의 다양한 의미를 활용한 언어유희가 사용되었다.

2001년에는 노동당이 보수당 야당 대표를 단지 대처리즘의 낡은 유산에 불과하다고 암시하며 반격했다. 그 포스터는 유명 공포영화의 한 대사를 차용했다.

몇 년 뒤 노동당은 보수당의 재정 지출 공약을 공격했다. 영어에는 어떤 일이 절대 일어나지 않을 것 같을 때 "돼지가 하늘을 나는 날에나 가능하다"라고 말하는 표현이 있다.

하지만 이 모든 포스터는 전국 단위 선거에서 나온 사례들이다. 지방선거에서는 이렇게 독하고 풍자적인 공격을 거의 볼 수 없다.

한국의 지방선거는 다르다. 느낌표를 제외하면 사실상 시각적 요소가 거의 없다.

하지만 거기에 적힌 주장과 비난은 눈길을 끌다 못해 거의 명예훼손 수준에 가까울 때도 있다.

여론 조작과 민주주의 파괴에 대한 비난도 등장한다.

그러나 대부분의 경우 후보들은 서로의 도덕성을 공격한다.

폭행, 부패, 폭언, 전과 이력 등에 대한 비난이 난무한다.

모든 것이 지나치게 개인적이다. 정책 논의는 거의 없다. 일종의 시각공해다.

조지 오웰은 정치 언어란 거짓을 진실처럼 들리게 하고, 살인을 존경스럽게 보이도록 만드는 것이라고 말했다.

한국 정치에서 그 살인 무기는 바로 느낌표다.

In the song, Common People, Jarvis Cocker said, "Everyone hates a tourist…" By tourist he was referring to anyone trying on another person's everyday lived reality.

That is why the marketing and advertising target brand of the Young40 male so quickly became a derided cultural stereotype in Korea.

Korea's young saw 40 and 50something men dressed in oversized baseball caps using their generation's neologisms.

But without suffering the reality of young peoples' pressures: high cost accommodation, the effects of social media, a straightened job market etc.

Maybe the young are correct. But they are not as new as they think. Young40 has been around forever.

In the 1950s, the concept kidult emerged in the US to describe adults with responsibility who still watched cartoons at night. Today, they play with lego and retro-game.

I'm sure even Socrates noticed contemporaries failing to put their toys aside. But today might be different in one respect.

If scrolling a phone is Young40 then the entire population has been kidulted. Kidult is what's called a portmanteau word, a combination of two existing words to describe a novel idea. Eg brunch, smog, and vlog.

Another one is adultescent to describe an emotionally immature adult. And a rejuvenile to describe someone returning to their pre-adulthood state of being.

Who made these words? Usually it's the Young40 generation themselves, ironically poking fun at themselves from the comfort of a steady career and income.

The end of that line "everyone hates a tourist" is, "especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh."

노래 《Common People》에서 Jarvis Cocker는 "Everyone hates a tourist…"라고 말했다. 여기서 그가 말한 관광객(tourist)은 다른 사람의 일상적 삶의 현실을 잠시 체험해보려는 사람을 뜻했다.

바로 그렇기 때문에 한국에서 Young40 남성이라는 마케팅·광고 타깃 브랜드가 그렇게 빠르게 조롱받는 문화적 스테레오타입이 되었다.

한국의 젊은 세대는 40~50대 남성들이 oversized 야구 모자를 쓰고 자신들 세대의 신조어를 사용하는 모습을 보았다.

하지만 그들은 젊은 세대가 실제로 겪는 현실, 즉 비싼 주거비, 소셜미디어의 영향, 팍팍해진 취업시장 같은 압박은 겪지 않았다.

어쩌면 젊은 세대가 맞을지도 모른다. 하지만 그들이 생각하는 만큼 새로운 현상은 아니다. Young40은 사실 오래전부터 존재해왔다.

1950년대 미국에서는 'kidult'라는 개념이 등장했다. 책임을 가진 어른이면서도 밤에 만화를 보는 사람들을 설명하기 위한 말이었다. 오늘날 그들은 레고를 가지고 놀고 레트로 게임을 즐긴다.

아마 Socrates조차도 동시대 사람들이 장난감을 내려놓지 못하는 모습을 봤을 것이다. 다만 오늘날은 한 가지 점에서 다를 수 있다.

만약 스마트폰을 끝없이 스크롤하는 것이 Young40이라면, 이제는 전 인구가 kidult화된 셈이다. 'Kidult'는 portmanteau word(혼성어)라고 불리는 단어인데, 새로운 개념을 설명하기 위해 기존의 두 단어를 결합한 것이다. 예를 들어 brunch, smog, vlog 같은 단어들이 있다.

또 다른 예로는 감정적으로 미성숙한 어른을 뜻하는 'adultescent', 그리고 성인 이전 상태로 되돌아가는 사람을 뜻하는 'rejuvenile' 같은 말이 있다.

이 단어들을 만든 사람은 누구일까? 대개는 Young40 세대 자신들이다. 안정된 직업과 수입의 편안함 속에서, 아이러니하게도 자기 자신을 풍자하며 만든 말들이다.

그리고 "everyone hates a tourist"라는 문장의 마지막은 이렇게 이어진다.

"especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh."

"특히 모든 걸 그저 웃긴 일쯤으로 여기는 관광객을 말이다."

When I came to Korea, the neologisms of the time reflected an upward swing in status, and possibly even happiness.

In 2000 we had, for example, 된장녀 to describe young ladies who spent more on expensive coffee than lunch. Though satirical, it reflected lifestyle growth and developing powers of consumption among the young. 킹카 / 퀸카 reflected social confidence in a rapidly changing society. 몸짱 was indicative of the fitness boom and a nascent self-improvement culture. The 명품족 were into expensive European luxury brands. Meanwhile, 얼짱 spoke of new internet celebrity and looks culture.

At this time, Korea was supposedly still a "developing country." To my eyes, however, it was developed long before the country itself dared call itself developed. A developed country is usually defined by its quality of life, advanced technical infrastructure and post-industrial economy. Culturally, one might also say that a developed country is one that is mature enough to use its own language to disdain some of the effects of that development.

A country's development through its developed phase parallels that of an adult through theirs. And age brings realism. The developed Korea is now middle-aged. Korea has entered at least an early midlife-crisis phase.

The neologisms of the current decade reflect the creeping sense of futility that can strike the average male in midlife. 현타 describes a sudden sense of emptiness. N포세대, 삼포세대, and 오포세대 are about foregoing what was once thought basic. They are about giving up on life. 멘붕 refers to mental breakdown. 킹받네 describes easy irritation. And 번아웃 summarises the generalized condition of exhaustion from competing.

So today's Korean-language neologisms reflect the bitterness and disappointment of middle age.

Unless that is simply what I, also experiencing the bitterness and disappointment of middle age, have a tendency to notice.

제가 한국에 왔을 때, 당시 신조어들은 사회적 지위가 올라가는 느낌, 어쩌면 행복이 늘어나는 분위기까지 반영하고 있었다.

2000년에는 예를 들어 된장녀라는 말이 있었는데, 점심보다 비싼 커피에 더 많은 돈을 쓰는 젊은 여성을 가리켰다. 풍자적인 표현이었지만, 젊은 층의 생활 수준 상승과 소비력 증가를 보여 주는 말이었다. 킹카 / 퀸카는 빠르게 변하는 사회 속에서의 자신감을 나타냈다. 몸짱은 운동 열풍과 초기 자기계발 문화의 등장을 보여 주었다. 명품족은 유럽의 비싼 명품 브랜드를 즐기는 사람들이었다. 한편 얼짱은 새로운 인터넷 스타와 외모 중심 문화를 보여 주는 말이었다.

이 시기 한국은 아직 "개발도상국"이라고 불리기도 했다. 하지만 제 눈에는 한국은 스스로 선진국이라고 말하기 훨씬 전부터 이미 선진국이었다. 선진국은 보통 삶의 질, 발전된 기술 인프라, 그리고 탈산업 경제로 정의된다. 문화적으로 보면, 선진국은 자기 언어로 그 발전의 일부 부작용을 비판할 수 있을 만큼 성숙한 사회라고도 할 수 있다.

한 나라의 발전 과정은 한 사람이 성장하는 과정과도 비슷하다. 그리고 나이가 들면 현실을 보게 된다. 지금의 한국은 중년에 들어선 상태이고, 적어도 초기 중년 위기 단계에 들어간 것처럼 보인다.

요즘 신조어들은 중년에 접어든 사람들이 느낄 수 있는 점점 커지는 허무함을 반영하는 것처럼 보인다. 현타는 갑자기 찾아오는 공허함을 말한다. N포세대, 삼포세대, 오포세대는 예전에는 당연하다고 여겼던 것들을 포기하는 것을 뜻하며, 삶을 포기하는 느낌까지 담고 있다. 멘붕은 정신적으로 무너진 상태를 말하고, 킹받네는 쉽게 짜증 나는 상태를 말한다. 번아웃은 경쟁 속에서 느끼는 전반적인 탈진 상태를 요약하는 말이다.

그래서 요즘 한국어 신조어들은 중년의 씁쓸함과 실망을 보여 주는 것처럼 보인다.

물론 이것은 저 역시 중년의 씁쓸함과 실망을 느끼고 있어서 그런 것들만 더 잘 보이는 것일지도 모른다.

DH Lawrence pointed out that, unlike humans, little creatures never feel self-pity.

"I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself."

Lawrence's observation was probably born of self-disgust rather than a generalized observation on his fellow man.

But was he correct that birds don't whine?

Might we not be mistaken in perceiving a bird's trilling calls to the skies as music? They might be complaining about the wind. They might be warning of the arrival of a boring friend. They might be angry with the government.

How would we know?

We don't understand them.

And if we could understand them, would I be able to understand the birds in Korea?

Is it not true that I would find it harder to understand a Korean bird?

Actually, it would be.

Ornithologist Peter Mahler used sonograms to analyze bird song. He found local geographical dialects among sparrows in different valleys.

That surely means that, like the ancient Chinese in villages a mere 30 kilometers away, English and Korean sparrows basically speak an entirely different language.

Hence one so rarely sees Seoul sparrows in Gyongsangnamdo...

D. H. 로렌스는 인간과 달리 작은 생명체들은 결코 자기연민을 느끼지 않는다고 말했다.

"나는 자기 자신을 불쌍히 여기는 야생의 존재를 본 적이 없다. 작은 새 한 마리는 가지 위에서 얼어 죽으면서도 단 한 번도 스스로를 불쌍히 여기지 않는다."

로렌스의 이 관찰은 인간 전반에 대한 통찰이라기보다는, 오히려 자기혐오에서 비롯된 것일지도 모른다.

하지만 과연 그는 옳았을까? 정말 새들은 투덜거리지 않을까?

우리는 하늘로 울려 퍼지는 새의 지저귐을 음악으로 착각하고 있는 것은 아닐까? 그 소리는 바람에 대한 불평일 수도 있고, 지루한 친구가 다가오고 있다는 경고일 수도 있으며, 심지어 정부에 대한 분노일 수도 있다.

우리는 그것을 어떻게 알 수 있을까?

우리는 새의 말을 이해하지 못한다.

그리고 만약 이해할 수 있다 해도, 나는 한국의 새를 이해할 수 있을까?

한국 새들의 말이 더 어렵지 않을까?

실제로 그렇다.

조류학자 피터 말러는 소노그램을 이용해 새소리를 분석했다. 그는 서로 다른 계곡에 사는 참새들 사이에 지역 방언이 존재한다는 사실을 발견했다.

이는 마치 고대 중국에서 불과 30킬로미터 떨어진 마을들조차 서로 전혀 다른 언어를 쓰던 것과 같다. 영국의 참새와 한국의 참새 역시 본질적으로는 완전히 다른 언어를 쓰고 있는 셈이다.

그래서 서울 참새가 경상남도에서 거의 보이지 않는 것이다.

Last time we looked at a visual expression of anger. Our author used swearing at the public to get his way. I am sure there are many times when shopkeepers would love to do the same.

But they are bound by the laws of commerce. One of which is pretend to like the public. So their request methods omit swearing, probably after editing...

The workers in this convenience store have had enough. It is one of the commercial hazards of operating a store at the entrance to a mall that you also become an information center. Like me operating as an all-purpose human English guidebook in Korea. It is a problem of location.

This notice seeks to answer the most common public pleas.

1. Do you sell hangover medication?
2. I need the toilet.
3. Where can I eat popcorn?
4. And which floor is the 43rd floor coffee shop on?

But does it answer the questions sufficiently? The first one: yes, clearly and bluntly.

The second presumes a prima facie knowledge of the location of 월미당.

The third instruction works.

While the fourth suffers the same issue as the second.

Meanwhile, the ATM instruction confuses me. To locate the ATM you have to use the electronic toy catcher?

Looking a bit closer for socio-linguistic clues, I notice a couple of things:

Red lettering: Obviously, red is a standout color. But it also signifies anger, or irritation. DO NOT COME IN AND ASK!

Using the location of one business to indicate proximity just raises further questions about location. A map might be more useful.

The convenience store is providing inadvertent free advertising for two small businesses.

The notice is a handy semiotic reminder of human priorities: medication to recover, toilets to relieve, movies for distraction, and coffee.

But as an outsider, every signpost is an opportunity to learn. 앨베 is short for elevator. I assumed 달곰 meant sweet but it actually refers to a bear native to Korea. And I don't know what the 월미 in 월미당 refers to. The park in Incheon?

So if I, as an all-purpose human English guidebook in Korea, were to attach a similar notice to my clothing as I walked around, what would it say? These are the answers

1. England
2. Yes, he played for Spurs
3. Don't worry about grammar and make more mistakes

What are the questions?

지난번에는 공공장소에서의 분노 표현을 살펴보았다. 우리의 작가는 대중을 향해 욕설을 사용함으로써 자신의 목적을 관철하려 했다. 아마도 가게 주인들 역시 그렇게 하고 싶은 순간이 많을 것이다. 하지만 그들은 상거래의 법칙에 묶여 있다. 그중 하나가 바로 '손님을 좋아하는 척하기'다. 그래서 그들의 요청 방식에서는 욕설이 빠지는데, 아마 편집 과정을 거친 결과일 것이다.

이 편의점 직원들은 이제 한계에 다다랐다. 쇼핑몰 입구에 있는 가게를 운영하는 데 따르는 상업적 위험 중 하나는, 그 가게가 정보 안내소 역할까지 하게 된다는 점이다. 한국에서 내가 만능 인간 영어 안내서처럼 기능하는 것과 비슷하다. 이는 위치의 문제다.

이 안내문은 사람들이 가장 자주 묻는 질문들에 답하고자 한다.

1. 숙취해소제 파나요?
2. 화장실 어디예요?
3. 팝콘은 어디서 먹을 수 있나요?
4. 43층 커피숍은 몇 층에 있나요?

그런데 이 질문들에 충분히 답하고 있을까? 첫 번째는 그렇다. 분명하고 직설적이다. 두 번째는 월미당의 위치를 이미 알고 있다는 전제를 깔고 있다. 세 번째 안내는 잘 작동한다. 네 번째는 두 번째와 같은 문제를 안고 있다.

ATM 안내는 나를 혼란스럽게 한다. ATM을 찾으려면 전자 인형 뽑기 기계를 이용해야 한다는 건가?

사회언어학적 단서를 조금 더 자세히 살펴보면 몇 가지가 눈에 띈다. 빨간 글씨: 분명 눈에 잘 띄는 색이지만, 동시에 분노나 짜증을 의미하기도 한다. "들어와서 묻지 마세요." 한 가게의 위치를 기준으로 근접성을 설명하는 방식은 오히려 위치에 대한 추가 질문을 낳는다. 지도 하나가 더 유용할지도 모른다. 이 편의점은 의도치 않게 두 개의 소규모 상점에 무료 광고를 해주고 있다.

이 안내문은 인간의 우선순위를 보여주는 편리한 기호학적 상기다. 회복을 위한 약, 해소를 위한 화장실, 주의를 돌리기 위한 영화, 그리고 커피.

외부인의 시선에서 보면 모든 표지판은 학습의 기회다. '앨베'는 엘리베이터의 줄임말이다. 나는 '달곰'이 달콤하다는 뜻인 줄 알았지만, 실제로는 한국에 서식하는 곰을 가리킨다고 한다. 그리고 '월미당'의 '월미'가 무엇을 의미하는지는 아직 모르겠다. 인천의 월미공원을 말하는 걸까?

그렇다면 한국에서 만능 인간 영어 안내서로 활동하는 내가, 길을 걸어다니며 옷에 비슷한 안내문을 붙인다면 뭐라고 적혀 있을까? 답은 다음과 같다.

그렇다면 질문은 무엇일까?

Today's look at the korean language as it is used in Korea requires an 'adult advisory' warning.

It contains language that I do not use. I 'swear freely' in English. But I make it a rule never to swear in Korean.

Why? Because I have heard Korean native speakers swear in English. It never ever comes across well.

Swearing in anger a foreign language exposes the language of swearing for what it is: a base failure to explain oneself.

It sounds affected, lazy, and hateful. It is also often contextually wrong in usage and even nuance. For swearing is a linguistic art.

Swearing requires real mastery of the language. Or to have been raised in the language. Neither of which I have or was.

But the owner of this small ramshackle property has and was. To make the vehemence of his point clear, he has bypassed the customary first stage of linguistic petitioning — polite request — and gone immediately and directly to violent anger.

I don't need to read this out loud. Doing so would violate my rule about swearing in Korean. Instead, you can read it. Across 4 little posters attached to the bars and windows of his homestead, the message is clear:

please, dear ladies and gentlemen, I beseech you to do your earnest best not to accidentally dispose of your cigarette butts in front of my little home.

The interesting thing about these 대자보 (dazibao 大字报) is their duration. They have been there as long as I remember.

Some might consider them a form of visual pollution. I think they add character to the neighborhood. Others, like fervent nonsmokers, may nod in agreement.

Maybe no one dares to knock on his door and ask the author to take them down. For the personality of one disposed to author their own rage to passerby is surely not receptive to the outside world.

But everyone seems to be respecting his — and it is surely a man — right to free speech. As well as his liberty to protest. In such a scenario, swearing serves as a kind of thermometer taking the temperature of Korea's democracy at a neighborhood level. And it seems very healthy.

Also, I noticed that there were zero cigarette butts in front of his hovel. Swearing, it seems, works.

오늘 한국에서 실제로 사용되는 한국어를 살펴보는 이 이야기는, 솔직히 말해 '성인 주의' 경고가 필요하다.

여기에는 내가 쓰지 않는 언어가 포함되어 있다. 나는 영어로는 욕을 비교적 자유롭게 한다. 하지만 한국어로는 절대 욕을 하지 않는다는 원칙을 지켜왔다.

왜냐하면 한국어 모국어 화자들이 영어로 욕하는 장면을 들어본 적이 있기 때문이다. 그것은 단 한 번도 좋게 들린 적이 없다.

외국어로 분노에 찬 욕설을 내뱉는 순간, 욕이라는 언어가 가진 본질이 그대로 드러난다. 그것은 결국 자신을 제대로 설명하지 못한 데서 비롯된 가장 원초적인 실패다.

그렇게 들리는 욕은 꾸며진 것 같고, 성의 없으며, 공격적이다. 게다가 상황에 맞지 않거나 뉘앙스를 완전히 빗나가는 경우도 많다. 욕이라는 것은 사실 상당히 고도의 언어 기술이기 때문이다.

욕을 제대로 하려면 그 언어를 완전히 장악했거나, 그 언어 속에서 자라났어야 한다. 나는 그 어느 쪽도 아니다.

하지만 이 허름한 작은 집의 주인은 그렇다. 그는 그런 환경에서 자랐고, 그런 언어를 몸으로 익힌 사람이다. 자신의 분노와 요구를 분명히 하기 위해 그는 보통의 언어적 절차, 즉 정중한 요청이라는 첫 단계를 건너뛰고 곧바로 노골적이고 격렬한 분노로 직행했다.

The Korean in Korea is sometimes a mystery to Koreans too. Even Koreans don't know some Korean vocabulary.

For example, what's this green thing? What is this metal surround structure guarding the tree base called? It must have a name.

And what do you call these raised tiles laid to notify people that they are at the road's edge?

And this thing? What is the Korean word for this plastic orange tube fixed to the ground to prevent parking?

I have no idea. And I'm guessing many Koreans don't know either.

So I quickly surveyed 4 Korean acquaintances. None knew. I wanted to look the words up in the dictionary. But I didn't know the English word either.

In conclusion? Nouns don't matter. In other words, it is better to be able to use simple language to describe what a thing looks like or does than name it.

I doubt even 1 in a thousand English speakers know any of the following words

1. What is the name of that plastic tube around the end of a shoelace? — aglet.
2. What do you call the small plastic object placed in the center of a pizza box to prevent the lid from touching the pizza? — box tent.
3. What is your little toe or finger called? — minimus.
4. What is the name of that space between your eyebrows? — glabella.
5. What is the name of the dots above letters? — tittle

한국에서 쓰는 한국어는 가끔 한국인한테도 미스터리다. 한국인들도 모르는 단어가 꽤 많다.

예를 들면, 이 초록색 물건은 뭐라고 하나? 나무 밑동 보호하는 이 금속 구조물도 이름이 있을 텐데 잘 안 떠오른다.

그리고 도로 가장자리라는 걸 알려주려고 깔아둔 이 돌출 타일은 뭐라고 부르나?

또 이건? 주차 못 하게 바닥에 박아둔 이 주황색 플라스틱 기둥, 한국어로 뭐라고 하냐?

나도 모르겠다. 아마 많은 한국인도 모를 것 같다.

그래서 한국인 지인 4명에게 물어봤다. 아무도 몰랐다. 사전에서 찾으려 해도 영어 단어도 모르니 검색이 안 됐다.

결론은 단순하다. 명사는 크게 중요하지 않다. 정확한 이름을 아는 것보다 생김새나 기능을 쉽게 설명하는 능력이 더 쓸모 있다.

아마 영어 원어민 천 명 중 한 명도 아래 단어들을 모를 것이다.

The Korean in Korea is repetitive. Today again I was 마수. I made a joke of it, showing the automated receipt to the café workers.

It was a silver café, so both were seniors. Seniors are more disposed to simple Korean language jokes from foreigners. It wasn't even that funny. I just held up the receipt and said '마수다.'

They forgave me the 반말. As a foreigner all you have to do get a laugh is to reproduce some idiomatic Korean. It sounds cute, considerate even, like you've made an effort beyond the textbook. Anyway it broke all ice in the vicinity. And I got a little humor in return.

When the man called me over to pick up the coffee he did a little wavy dance with his arms and sang, '찰랑, 찰랑...'.

I laughed but had to consult Naver dictionary. Amazingly, I got the spelling right first time. This onomatopoeiac word means full to the brim.

There is no English equivalent. But when I left, I said, "찰랑찰랑 해주셔서 감사합니다" Cue more raucous laughter.

Unerringly, the very next morning I was 마수 again. You know what happens next…

This time I added a request for them to make it 찰랑찰랑. Now the laughter was becoming forced. I think I need some new jokes.

저는 웃었지만 네이버 사전을 확인해야 했습니다. 놀랍게도 철자를 처음에 맞췄습니다. 아, 의성어입니다. 가득 차 있다는 뜻입니다.

영어로는 딱히 대응어가 없습니다. 하지만 떠나며 "찰랑찰랑 해주셔서 감사합니다"라고 하자… 더 큰 웃음이 터졌습니다.

믿기 어렵겠지만, 바로 다음 날 저는 또 마수였습니다. 무슨 일이 일어났는지 알겠습니다…

이번에는 "찰랑찰랑하게 해 주세요"라고 요청까지 추가했습니다. 웃음은 조금 억지스러워 보였습니다. 새로운 농담이 필요하겠다는 생각이 듭니다.

The Korean in Korea reflects ancient superstitions. Yellow signifies the earth and nobility to those that know. But to me, it signifies cheap coffee.

The two yellow-colored franchises sell large coffees for less than one British pound. If you do not mind the looping K-pop background music, they are as good as anywhere.

Yesterday I arrived at my destination early. The worker was still setting up the till. "So I'm the first customer?" "Masu," she said. So I was sure to be polite. And I didn't ask to use points. Why?

According to Korean superstition, interaction with the first customer at any business can set the tone for the entire day's success. If the first transaction proceeds smoothly, it will be a good day. If it goes badly, disaster might ensue. Or the owner will be 'swatting flies.'

If things go wrong, a traditionally-minded business owner will pile up salt outside the business entrance; not to season the concrete, but to ward off evil spirits.

Being first in Korea is mighty significant. The first son, for example, has a weighty responsibility to succeed in life. He sets the tone for his subsequent siblings. He also gets to inherit all of his parents' wealth. It's a payoff for the burden.

Being first for the nation is also huge. Olympic gold medal winners are excused military service. Meanwhile, the eldest might still take the first bite of food at the table. Being first puts you at the top of the hierarchy in a very hierarchical place.

In a group-oriented culture, first puts you in an elite group. I thought, that's why Korea is such a competitive society. This explains the country's miraculous success. Everyone wants to be first. "Second is last." The pressure is crushing.

I told the worker it would be a good day. I am always a model customer. Then I asked if, as masu, I could get a discount. She said no. But she did say she would accept points. Some business owners take the superstition as far as preferring cash for the first transaction.

I sat down and checked my dictionary. I discovered that you don't always want to be masu. A homonym of masu is demonic beast.

In any language there are a few stock one word phrases that you will hear on repeat. The Korean in Korea is no different. 'Tasty!' And "I hate it!', for example. Another is 'cute'.

Cute gets closer to universal consensus than tasty, however. Personally, I like the taste of apple cider vinegar. Most people say 'I hate it!' But a cute baby is a cute baby and nearly everyone — apart perhaps from someone who is struggling to sleep at night due to a baby crying — will agree.

So cuteness is something everyone can reach consensus on as a fact. It unites. And, as an acquaintance once observed, Koreans do cute very well. Cute cop characters on police stations. Little kids raising their hands to warn off the traffic. Chubby pigs advertising their own bodies as scrumptious. Cuteness is everywhere. But it is still subjective.

Me, I find this cute. Watch the crab as it ventures sideways... marshalling its limbic system to negotiate the environment... I'm sure those eyes are innocently addressing mine... eyes, of course, help us relate to animals: perhaps it thinks and feels on some level like me. Is it working or playing?

Anyway it's cute.

Here's the thing about Korean in Korea though. It's not just the thing that's cute. It's the Korean word itself which is cute. At least to my ears. Take animals. My favorite word in Korean is hedgehog. That English word is not cute. It implies some kind of pig that festers in the undergrowth.

But the Korean word for hedgehog — 고슴도치 — is onomatopoeaic. It has a memorable euphony. And it is four syllables long, like a traditional proverb. I have no idea about the word hedgehog's etymology. But it adds cuteness to the creature.

개 is not cute. But 강아지 is. It has a playful quality, redolent of a naughty puppy. It ends in that appealing soft 'g'. And there are others. 송아지, 반달곰, 병아리, 다람쥐…

When the language itself is cute, the world becomes cute. And words roll off the tongue…

어떤 언어든지 몇 가지 한 단어짜리 표현들이 반복적으로 들리기 마련이에요. 한국의 한국어도 다르지 않죠. "맛있다!", "싫어!", 예를 들어 이런 것들요. 또 다른 예는 "귀엽다!"예요.

"귀엽다"는 "맛있다"보다 보편적인 합의에 더 가깝습니다. 예를 들어 저는 사과식초 맛을 좋아하지만 대부분의 사람들은 "싫어!"라고 하죠. 하지만 귀여운 아기는 귀여운 아기일 뿐이고, 아기 울음 때문에 밤에 잠 못 이루는 사람 정도를 빼면 거의 모두가 동의합니다.

그래서 귀여움은 누구나 받아들일 수 있는 개념이고, 우리를 하나로 묶어 줍니다. 한 지인이 말했듯 한국 사람들은 귀여움을 참 잘 다룹니다. 경찰서에 붙은 귀여운 경찰 캐릭터, 손을 들어 교통에 주의를 주는 어린아이들, 자기 몸을 맛있다며 광고하는 통통한 돼지들. 귀엽다 어디에나 있습니다. 하지만 여전히 주관적인 것이기도 하지요…

예를 들어 저는 이런 걸 귀엽다고 느낍니다. 옆으로 살금살금 움직이는 게를 보세요… 주변 환경을 헤쳐 나가려고 자기 변연계를 동원하는 모습 말이에요… 저 눈이 순진하게 제 눈을 바라보고 있는 게 분명하다고 생각됩니다… 눈은 우리가 동물과 교감하게 도와주죠… 어쩌면 그 게도 어떤 수준에서는 저처럼 생각하고 느낄지도 몰라요… 일하는 걸까요, 노는 걸까요…

부드럽고 핑크빛이 맴돌아 아무튼 귀엽다. 한국에 한국어는, 단순히 대상이 귀엽다는 게 아니라 한국어 자체가 귀엽다는 겁니다. 적어도 제 귀에는 그렇게 들립니다. 동물을 예로 들어봅시다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 한국어 단어는 "고슴도치"입니다.

영어의 hedgehog는 전혀 귀엽지 않아요. 덤불 속에 숨어 사는 어떤 한심한 작은 돼지를 떠올리게 하니까요. 하지만 한국어에서 '고슴도치'라는 단어는 의성어적입니다. 기억에 남는 아름다운 음조를 가지고 있습니다. 전통 사자성어처럼 네 음절로 이루어져 있습니다.

'고슴도치'라는 단어의 어원은 잘 모르겠습니다. 그러나 이 단어는 그 생물에게 귀여움을 더해 줍니다. '개'는 귀엽지 않지만, '강아지'는 귀엽습니다. 장난꾸러기 강아지 같은 발랄함이 있으며, 끝의 부드러운 '지' 소리가 매력적입니다.
