The white house lawn. A venerable setting for US presidential statements.
Rarely do they include a quote from religion, folklore, and Star Wars.
President Trump's did.
"I am the chosen one."
The president's statement was ostensibly about the trade war with China. He is a war president. This is his destiny. To fight for America against its greatest rival of the time: China.
It's an economic war. And a war of words. He uses words like 'rip off' and 'theft'.
He is speaking to the assembled journalists, purveyors of "fake news". Disrespect and contempt are part of this president's linguistic armory.
He is telling them: I don't seek to avoid conflict.
And he is telling the Chinese: Yes, we are at war.
Declarations of war can be longwinded, sententious…
It is the habit of leaders to say it is a war 'forced upon them'.
President Trump is no different in this respect.
But other presidents, he complains, should have fought this war a long time ago. "China has been ripping us off for many years."
He ends with that quote from religion, folklore, and Star Wars: "I am the chosen one."
But chosen for what?

미국 대통령이 중요한 성명을 발표하는, 권위 있는 무대다.
하지만 그 연설에 종교와 민담, 그리고 스타워즈의 대사가 함께 등장하는 일은 드물다.
트럼프 대통령은 그렇게 했다.
"내가 선택받은 사람입니다."
표면적으로 그의 연설은 중국과의 무역전쟁에 관한 것이었다. 트럼프는 전쟁의 대통령이다. 이것이 그의 운명이다. 당시 미국의 가장 강력한 경쟁자였던 중국과 맞서 싸우는 것.
경제 전쟁이다. 그리고 언어의 전쟁이다. 그는 '갈취하다(rip off)', '도둑질(theft)' 같은 단어를 사용한다.
그가 말을 건네는 상대는 현장에 모인 기자들이다. 그들 역시 그가 말하는 '가짜 뉴스'의 생산자들이다. 무시는 이 대통령의 언어적 무기고에 들어 있는 무기다. 경멸도 마찬가지다.
그는 기자들에게 말한다. 나는 갈등을 피하지 않는다.
그리고 중국에도 말한다. "그래, 우리는 전쟁 중이다."
전쟁을 선포하는 말은 길고 장황하기 마련이다. 지도자들은 대개 이 전쟁이 '강요된 전쟁'이었다고 말하는 습관이 있다. 트럼프 대통령도 이 점에서는 다르지 않다.
하지만 그는 다른 대통령들이 이 전쟁을 훨씬 오래전에 시작했어야 했다고 주장한다. "중국은 수년 동안 우리를 등쳐먹어 왔습니다."
그리고 그는 종교와 민담, 그리고 스타워즈에서나 나올 법한 그 한마디로 연설을 끝맺는다.
"내가 선택받은 사람입니다."
하지만… 무엇을 위해 선택받았다는 것일까?
