Trump revels in the language of destruction: annihilate, exterminate, eliminate, obliterate, eradicate.
These words ending with the suffix 'ate' derive from Latin causative verbs. They make Trump's English sound unmerciful and omnipotent — like a Roman emperor himself. Or God.
It is language that bypasses diplomatic to and fros. It goes straight to the threat of action.
So Trump, who usually employs a simple syntactical style — "we're going to drill, drill, drill" — is simultaneously semantically extreme.
Such words — obliterate, eradicate — also imply complete removal. Mere victory is not what Trump and America wants. The enemy is a physical obstacle that should no longer exist in reality.
Annihilate comes from the Latin phrase ad nihilum, meaning "to nothing."
Is that where we are going?
그래서 트럼프는 보통 "were going to drill, drill, drill"처럼 단순한 syntactical style, 통사적 문체를 구사하면서도, 동시에 semantically extreme, 의미적으로는 극단적이다.
obliterate, 흔적도 없이 없애다, eradicate, 뿌리 뽑다 같은 단어는 완전한 제거를 뜻하기도 한다. 단순한 승리는 트럼프와 미국이 원하는 것이 아니다. 적은 현실에 더 이상 존재해서는 안 되는 physical obstacle, 물리적 장애물이다.
annihilate는 "아무것도 없음"을 뜻하는 라틴어 표현 ad nihilum에서 유래했다.
우리는 그곳으로 가고 있는 걸까?
