We have seen the president make reference to hell in a jokey way.
But hell is no joke. And this time Trump, standing before the UN, was serious.
First came the carrot: "Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before?" he asked.
Then the stick: "Or do I ….drive them into hell?"
Trump, aware of his fleshly and deal-cutting past, once joked that becoming president was "the only way I'm going to get to heaven."
However, the octogenarian has only ever been a fair-weather believer in heaven.
"I don't believe in reincarnation, heaven or hell — but we go someplace," Trump said in a 1990 interview.
So might Trump's constant threats of hell be projection of his own fears?
And is his hell on earth real? Should Iran worry?
Or like the "real" hell is it just a threat to bring moral miscreants to heel?

그리고 stick, 채찍이 나왔다. "아니면 내가…. 그들을 hell, 지옥으로 몰아넣을까요?"
자신이 육체적인 욕망과 deal-cutting, 거래를 성사시키는 데 익숙한 과거를 잘 알고 있는 트럼프는 한때 대통령이 되는 것이 "내가 천국에 갈 수 있는 유일한 방법"이라고 농담한 적이 있다.
하지만 팔순을 넘긴 이 남자는 평생 heaven, 천국을 fair-weather believer, 상황이 좋을 때만 믿는 신자처럼 대했다.
"나는 환생도, 천국도, 지옥도 믿지 않습니다. 하지만 우리는 어딘가로 가게 됩니다." 트럼프는 1990년 인터뷰에서 이렇게 말했다.
그렇다면 트럼프가 끊임없이 지옥을 위협하는 것은 자신의 두려움을 projection, 투사하고 있는 것일까?
그리고 그의 hell on earth, 지상에서의 지옥은 실제로 존재하는가? 이란은 걱정해야 하는가?
아니면 '진짜' 지옥과 마찬가지로, 그것은 단지 moral miscreants, 도덕적 잘못을 저지른 자들을 bring to heel, 굴복시키기 위한 위협에 불과한 것일까?
