세계 무역은 엉망입니다
There is an expression in English: Everything in the garden is rosy. It means there are no problems to be seen. So in an actual rose garden you might expect only good news.
But on the White House Rose Garden lawn, the president had some bad news. The President's English was resolutely downbeat: "terrible, tough, bad, wrong…."
When things are good, when the president is referring to himself or the policies he has implemented, his English is exuberant.
But the president's language lives in a black and white world. So when things are bad, when the president is referring to others or the policies of others, his English is negative.
Negatives multiply negatives. The focus of the president's English was deals made with China, in health and trade.
Along the way, as he mentioned relative population sizes, he got sidetracked: the subject of immigration came up.
Illegals. A big negative.
In the president's English, every issue is intertwined. But his conclusion is the same: America has been getting a bad deal.
To overturn a bad deal, you have to be a tough negotiator. Tough negotiators don't mince words.
But do smart negotiators reveal their grievances in advance?
영어에는 이런 표현이 있다. Everything in the garden is rosy. 모든 것이 순조롭다는 뜻이다. 그러니 실제 장미 정원이라면 좋은 소식만 있을 것이라고 기대하게 된다.
하지만 백악관 로즈가든에서 대통령은 나쁜 소식을 전했다. 대통령의 영어는 시종일관 어두웠다. "끔찍합니다. 힘듭니다. 나쁩니다. 잘못됐습니다…"
상황이 좋을 때, 대통령이 자신이나 자신의 정책을 말할 때, 그의 영어는 자신감으로 넘쳐난다.
하지만 대통령의 언어는 흑백의 세계에 산다. 상황이 나쁠 때, 다른 사람이나 다른 사람의 정책을 말할 때, 그의 영어는 부정적이다.
부정은 또 다른 부정을 낳는다. 이날 대통령의 영어는 중국과의 보건과 무역 협정을 향하고 있었다.
그러다 국가별 인구 규모를 이야기하는 도중, 화제는 다른 곳으로 새어 나갔다. 이민 문제였다. 불법 이민자. 또 하나의 거대한 부정이다.
대통령의 영어에서는 모든 문제가 서로 얽혀 있다. 하지만 결론은 언제나 같다. 미국은 계속해서 손해를 보고 있다는 것이다.
나쁜 거래를 뒤집으려면 강한 협상가가 되어야 한다. 강한 협상가는 돌려 말하지 않는다.
하지만 영리한 협상가도 자신의 불만을 미리 드러낼까?
