In 1938, British playwright Patrick Hamilton wrote the play Gas Light. In it, a cruel husband manipulates his wife's thoughts to make her believe she is losing her mind.

One of the ways he does this is by dimming the house's gaslights in order to make her doubt her own reality and, thus, the truth of things.

Gaslighting is today used as shorthand for a pattern of psychological manipulation that causes someone to question their own perception of reality.

When asked whether he had ordered restrictions on Ukraine's access to SpaceX's Starshield satellite technology, President Trump replied:

"It wasn't me, and I don't think it was Elon. I don't know if it was anybody. From what I understand, it's the same as it's always been."

Negation, denial, uncertainty, then sowing the seeds of doubt in reality.

"It wasn't me, and I don't think it was Elon. I don't know if it was anybody. From what I understand, it's the same as it's always been."

Negation, denial, uncertainty,
