This week recorded the first invitation in American history by a sitting American president for a foreign adversary to destroy one of its cities.

Trump was reported as saying about Iran:

"They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego."

It sounded like the president of the United States was saying that the nuclear annihilation of a major homeland population center was a price worth paying for cheaper gas.

But when I watched the video and listened to the president's speech, I heard it slightly differently. I heard him say, "They could take out a city."

That use of "could" rather than "can" invites a hypothetical inference. And so what follows — "Let 'em take out Los Angeles. Let 'em take out San Diego" — follows as a warning of what might happen should he not finish prosecuting the ongoing war till its successful end.

So fighting the war to defend those cities is a price worth paying, he is saying.

That third person imperative 'Let 'em', with its folksy colloquial contraction, functions not as actual permission. It is a warning that those who would not prosecute the war with Iran now are in effect "letting" the Iranians potentially take out an American city.

There can be ambiguity to the president's semantic simplicity.

They could take out a city."
