Donald Trump is busy fighting Iran in the Middle East.
But he is also fighting a war on a grammatical front. The president's enemy is correct use of the comma.
In a post praising a new book praising him, commas are everywhere.
The president writes: "Entitled, THE COUNTER REVOLUTION, he understands me, perhaps better, than I understand myself." The commas after "entitled" and "me" and "better" are incorrect usages.
Trump's Truth Social posts show a defiant disregard for correct comma usage. But they also reflect Trump's emphasis and the rhythm of his thought.
Commas provoke in the reader a pause. That first comma is a pause in which the president linguistically 'holds up the book' to show us what he is talking about. And the comma after "better" serves to add gravitas.
In any case, that is what a charitable interpretation of his short form media posting might say.
